Beverly of Graustark guide

Summary

Beverly Calhoun, an independent young American and friend of Princess Yetive of Graustark, travels to visit her despite threatened war. Gabriel, the escaped former prisoner of Graustark, has seized Dawsbergen’s throne from his half brother Dantan and put a price on Dantan’s head.

Abandoned by her escort and driver in the mountains, Beverly and her servant Aunt Fanny accept help from an armed band led by Baldos, an educated and capable man who calls himself a goat-hunter and poacher. Mistaken for Princess Yetive, Beverly maintains the disguise. Baldos protects her during a storm and an animal attack, during which she accidentally shoots him. When he develops a fever, she insists on taking him to Ganlook for treatment despite his fear of arrest. Reunited with Yetive, Beverly obtains royal protection for him and his companions.

At the court in Edelweiss, Beverly continues playing the princess while defending Baldos’s concealed identity. His military knowledge helps improve Graustark’s defenses but also attracts suspicion. Count Marlanx, the commanding general, resents him and seeks power over Beverly. Baldos refuses to fight Dawsbergen or Axphain, though he pledges his life to the princess’s defense.

Beverly’s affection deepens, but secret messages between Baldos and his companion Ravone unsettle her. Baldos explains that he has sent wages to his hungry friends and reveals that he has long known Beverly is an American. Their royal pretense becomes an expression of his devotion. Beverly nevertheless fears that he is the fugitive Dantan and loves another woman. He declares his love for Beverly, and she gives him a rose.

Marlanx accuses Baldos of spying, has him watched, and attempts to secure his arrest. Yetive intervenes to protect him. After Baldos narrowly escapes a shooting, Beverly arranges a secret meeting. In an underground passage, Marlanx’s men attack them, and Baldos fights to protect her. Marlanx subsequently threatens to expose Beverly’s involvement in Baldos’s supposed escape unless she submits to him.

The confrontation comes when Yetive dismisses Marlanx and Baldos reappears, defeating the claim that he has fled. Beverly promises to marry him regardless of his apparent station. News then arrives that Dantan’s supporters have recaptured Gabriel. Princess Candace defends Baldos, and the revelations establish that he guarded the underground passage against Gabriel’s plan to murder Yetive and her husband, Grenfall Lorry. Marlanx withdraws his accusations; Baldos receives public honors.

Yetive appoints General Braze to replace Marlanx, banishes the disgraced count, and confiscates his estates. Gabriel is imprisoned again, and Dantan’s restoration removes the threat of war. Candace joyfully reunites with Ravone. Yetive and Lorry remain safe in Graustark. Baldos tells Beverly that their future must be in the east and announces an intention to settle his quarrel with Marlanx in Vienna. Finally, Beverly learns that Baldos himself is Prince Dantan, a fact Yetive and the court already know. Delighted that she loved him as a vagabond, he embraces her and promises to come for her in Washington.

The ending

Gabriel is recaptured, Dantan’s restoration is celebrated, and Marlanx is banished and loses his estates; General Braze replaces him. Candace reunites with Ravone, while Yetive and Lorry are safe. Beverly discovers that Baldos is Prince Dantan. They embrace, and he promises to come for her in Washington; their wedding does not occur before the book ends.

Gabriel defies Yetive and offers a reward for the head of Dantan, who is hiding near the Graustark frontier.

Chapter 2: Beverly Calhoun

Beverly Calhoun, the daughter of Major George Calhoun, becomes a close friend of Princess Yetive in Washington. Beverly arranges to visit St. Petersburg with Aunt Josephine and intends to visit Graustark despite the prospect of war. Grenfall Lorry questions the plan, but Beverly insists she can go without telling her father.

Chapter 3: On the Road from Balak

Beverly Calhoun and Aunt Fanny travel toward Graustark in a coach with a Russian escort. The guides refuse to continue, and gunfire ahead sends the escort fleeing toward Balak. The driver lashes the horses forward, intending to abandon Beverly and Aunt Fanny and escape into the hills.

Chapter 4: The Ragged Retinue

Beverly Calhoun begs the driver, Pauloff, to stop as he drives dangerously along the mountain road with her and Aunt Fanny inside. Pauloff stops and runs away, leaving the women to encounter an armed band whose leader addresses Beverly as royalty. The leader promises them safety and calls his men honest hunters, but Beverly remains uncertain about them.

Chapter 4: The Ragged Retinue

Beverly Calhoun learns that the armed band's leader mistakes her for Princess Yetive. The leader introduces himself as Baldos, a goat-hunter and poacher, and offers to take her to shelter for the night. Beverly accepts his help, and Baldos drives the coach onward while she worries about trusting him.

Chapter 5: The Inn of the Hawk and Raven

Beverly Calhoun tells Aunt Fanny to maintain her royal disguise and secretly retrieves her revolver as Baldos leads them to shelter. A violent storm strikes their refuge, tearing away the robes and blankets around Beverly's sleeping space. Baldos reaches Beverly through the storm, picks her up, and carries her away.

Chapter 6: The Home of the Lion

Baldos helps Beverly Calhoun and Aunt Fanny shelter from the storm in the cavern. Beverly accidentally shoots Baldos while he protects her from an animal attack, leaving her ashamed and worried about his wounds. Aunt Fanny assures Beverly that his injuries are not dangerous, and Beverly finally goes to bed at his request.

Chapter 7: Some Facts and Fancies

Beverly Calhoun, Aunt Fanny, and Baldos's companions leave the cavern and travel toward Ganlook. Hunger, an overnight stop, and a broken coach axle delay them, while Baldos develops a high fever. As they near Ganlook, Beverly insists that Baldos see a physician and orders the driver to hurry.

Chapter 8: Through the Ganlook Gates

Beverly Calhoun insists on taking Baldos into Ganlook for treatment despite his warning that entering the city could mean death. A soldier treats Beverly's claim to be the princess with open derision and takes her to Baron Dangloss. Beverly admits that she is not the princess, and Dangloss correctly identifies her as Miss Beverly Calhoun of Washington.

Chapter 9: The Redoubtable Dangloss

Baron Dangloss tells Beverly Calhoun that Princess Yetive has arrived safely in Ganlook, and Beverly asks him to obtain medical care for Baldos. Beverly and Yetive prepare a royal order protecting Baldos and his companions and requiring that Baldos receive treatment, clothing, and freedom. Dangloss witnesses Yetive's signature and reads the binding order with visible unease.

Chapter 10: Inside the Castle Walls

Princess Yetive stops her servants from tormenting Franz after Beverly Calhoun recognizes him and protests. Yetive and Beverly travel to Edelweiss, where crowds, cannon, and bands welcome the princess home. Count Marlanx helps Beverly from the carriage at the palace, leaving her safely inside the castle grounds.

Chapter 11: The Royal Coach of Graustark

Beverly Calhoun enjoys two weeks at Princess Yetive's court, where Harry Anguish, Dagmar, and their baby join the household. Beverly persuades Baldos to accept a six-month stay under her protection while he still addresses her as the princess. Franz secretly passes Baldos a note before Baldos leaves the Ganlook hospital in a royal coach with Beverly for Edelweiss.

Chapter 12: In Service

Beverly travels to Edelweiss with Baldos, who feels guilty about leaving his friends and wonders whether she is really Princess Yetive. At the castle, Beverly continues pretending to be the princess while Baldos notices movement behind a curtain. Baldos exposes Yetive and Countess Dagmar listening and asks Beverly whether he should escort them out.

Chapter 13: The Three Princes

Beverly dismisses Yetive and Dagmar, and Baldos angers Count Marlanx by failing to salute him. The castle party discusses possible identities for Baldos, including Christobal, who fled after resisting his father's choice of a bride. Beverly stops the others from questioning Baldos because she promised to protect his secret.

Chapter 14: A Visit and Its Consequences

Baldos and Haddan escort Beverly and Countess Dagmar to Count Marlanx's fortress. Concern grows that Baldos's military knowledge could expose him to accusations of spying, and he tells Beverly about three weaknesses in the defenses. Beverly asks Baldos to explain those weaknesses to the military authorities without volunteering that he has already discussed them with her.

Chapter 15: The Testing of Baldos

Beverly stays awake worrying that Baldos will be accused of betraying Graustark and that she will share the blame. During questioning, Marlanx demands that Baldos prove his loyalty by fighting against Dawsbergen. Baldos refuses to fight either Dawsbergen or Axphain but declares that he will defend the princess to the death.

Chapter 16: On the Way to St. Valentine's

Baldos proposes changes to the fortress, and Graustark's engineers begin strengthening its defenses. Beverly grows increasingly attached to him while they continue treating her as the princess. During an outing, Beverly sees Baldos secretly exchange papers with Ravone behind his horse, and her trust in him is shaken.

Chapter 17: A Note Translated

Beverly struggles between protecting Baldos and reporting his secret exchange, then summons him to explain it privately. Baldos gives her Ravone's note, but she cannot read its Graustark language and asks him to read it aloud. The note warns Baldos that Beverly is an American rather than the princess and advises him to guard his secrets.

Chapter 18: Confessions and Concessions

Baldos tells Beverly Calhoun that he has long known she is not Princess Yetive and still regards her as his sovereign. He explains that his message to Ravone contained wages for his hungry comrades and praise of Beverly, easing her suspicions. Count Marlanx, Yetive, Count Halfont, and Baron Dangloss interrupt their private conversation.

Chapter 19: The Night Fires

Beverly resents Count Marlanx's intrusion, while Baldos realizes that Haddan has been watching him. Marlanx accuses Baldos of spying for Gabriel, but Beverly rejects the accusation and gives Yetive the disputed note. Officers report signal fires in the surrounding hills, and Baldos disappears into the shadows as Marlanx watches Beverly accusingly.

Chapter 20: Gossip of Some Consequence

Count Marlanx orders troops to investigate the signal fires and places Baldos under close watch. Marlanx pressures Beverly to distrust Baldos, but she maintains her confidence in him. Reports of the fugitive princes' romantic attachments make Beverly suspect that Baldos is Dantan and that his secret messages concern Iolanda, leaving her unable to sleep.

Chapter 21: The Rose

After a sleepless night, Beverly tells Aunt Fanny that she intends to return to Washington. Later, Baldos declares his love at Beverly's balcony, kisses her hand, and receives a rose that she kisses before giving it to him. After Baldos returns to his patrol, Beverly sees Marlanx and the man watching Baldos looking toward her balcony.

Chapter 22: A Proposal

Beverly retreats into her room, ignores Marlanx's calls from below, and fears that he may approach her window. Yetive rebukes Marlanx for his conduct toward women and says that any charges against Baldos must receive a fair trial. Before Marlanx can arrest Baldos, Yetive orders Quinnox to send Baldos to the castle and disregard Marlanx's commands.

Chapter 23: A Shot in the Darkness

Baldos obeys Beverly's summons to the castle and narrowly escapes a gunshot on the way. He reports the attack to Yetive, Beverly, and Countess Dagmar, while Beverly blames Marlanx. Beverly later questions Baldos about Dantan and Christobal without resolving his identity, then orders him to meet her secretly in the chapel at two in the morning.

Chapter 24: Beneath the Ground

Count Marlanx prepares false accusations against Beverly Calhoun to force her into submission and orders his men to capture or kill Baldos. Two of Marlanx's men corner Beverly and Baldos in an underground passage, and Baldos fights to protect them both. Baldos kills the first attacker, but the second gets past his barrier and attacks him.

Chapter 25: The Valor of the South

Baldos fights the second attacker while Beverly holds the lantern, and a cloaked man identified as Marlanx threatens her with a sword. Later, Princess Yetive protects Beverly by telling the guard Ellos that Beverly entered the tunnel to stop Baldos from escaping. The guards find blood but no one in the passage, and Yetive orders secrecy while she and Beverly prepare for Marlanx's accusations.

Chapter 26: The Degradation of Marlanx

Marlanx sends Beverly a threatening letter demanding her submission in exchange for concealing her part in Baldos's escape. Yetive dismisses Marlanx from command, but he insists that Beverly must be punished for helping an alleged spy flee. Beverly then sees Baldos walking across the castle grounds and points him out to everyone.

Chapter 27: The Prince of Dawsbergen

Marlanx argues that Baldos left the castle to inform Graustark's enemies and returned because he expected protection. Beverly promises to marry Baldos, whom she calls Paul, and he assures her that coming news will clear him. When Ravone appears and signals to him, Baldos announces him as the Prince of Dawsbergen.

Chapter 28: A Boy Disappears

Baldos introduces the disguised girl as Princess Candace and announces that Prince Dantan's men have recaptured Gabriel, removing the threat of war. Candace defends Baldos's loyalty and warmly welcomes Beverly as the woman he loves. Lorry brings confirmation that Gabriel is imprisoned again, and Candace runs into Ravone's arms.

Chapter 29: The Capture of Gabriel

Yetive welcomes Ravone as Prince Dantan, and the prison report confirms Gabriel's capture while Lorry sends troops to secure him. Dantan explains that Gabriel intended to murder Yetive and Lorry and that Baldos guarded the underground passage against him. Marlanx withdraws his charges and awaits punishment, while Baldos receives public honors and kisses a faded rose as Beverly watches.

Chapter 30: In the Grotto

Princess Yetive replaces Count Marlanx with General Braze, banishes Marlanx, and confiscates his estates. Graustark seeks peace with Dawsbergen and Prince Dantan's restoration, while Beverly Calhoun anxiously awaits Baldos's return from his mission. Reunited with Beverly, Baldos says they must live in the east and announces that he will go to Vienna to settle his quarrel with Marlanx.

Chapter 31: Clear Skies

The Duke of Matz and his companions renew their loyalty to Prince Dantan, whose restoration brings celebration to the castle. Beverly Calhoun discovers that Baldos is Dantan and that Princess Yetive and the court already know his identity. Dantan rejoices that Beverly loved him as a vagabond, and they embrace as he promises to come for her in Washington.

  • Beverly resolves that the injured Baldos will ride inside the coach so he can travel with the party.

    • Baldos takes the rear seat inside the coach and travels with the party.
  • Baldos conceals his identity from enemies with an eye patch and refuses questions about his past; Beverly suspects that he and his polished companions are more than ordinary hunters.

    • His followers' deference establishes his authority, while his willingness to be left behind and refusal to summon them preserve their separation from the city's authorities.
    • Dangloss challenges Baldos's assumed identity, but Baldos withholds his history; Beverly can give Yetive only his limited account.
    • Beverly again suspects Baldos is no ordinary man, while his concealed connection with Franz continues through a clandestine delivery.
    • Dantan's identity remains concealed, while Dangloss renews investigative pressure through continuous surveillance.
    • The investigation produces competing princely identities without establishing either. Beverly's promise, upheld by Yetive, protects Baldos from direct questioning.
    • Ravone's identification as Prince Dantan excludes that identity for Baldos, whom Beverly now understands as the sovereign's humble friend; Baldos's full past remains unexplained.
    • The account explains Baldos's protective service and covert movements, and he receives royal recognition; these events do not explicitly establish a public disclosure of his identity.
    • Baldos is publicly revealed as Dantan, and Beverly learns that Yetive and the court already knew.
  • Beverly wants Baldos admitted to Edelweiss and placed under medical care, but he refuses; his subsequent fever makes obtaining a physician urgent.

    • Beverly and the followers overcome Baldos's refusal, and he enters Ganlook under her protection. Medical treatment is not yet secured, and detention complicates that aim.

    • Beverly obtains Yetive's signed and witnessed protection order, securing the practical safety and eventual freedom she sought through a pardon.
  • Beverly believes Yetive is approaching along an Axphainian-guarded route and fears that the planned attack on Ganlook will endanger her.

  • Baldos plans to separate from Beverly before Ganlook and send her onward with Franz, then yields to entering the city while his other followers depart.

    • Baldos's revised decision to enter Ganlook is carried out; his companions return to the hills except Franz.
  • Beverly seeks Dangloss's help by explaining her true identity and the travelers' situation.

    • Dangloss hears Beverly's account, arranges her reunion with Yetive, and obtains hospital care for Baldos.
  • Ganlook's officers detect Beverly's impersonation and hold her and Baldos under guard, bringing her promised protection into immediate jeopardy.

    • Beverly is released to join Yetive. Although Baldos is initially guarded, the subsequent witnessed royal command forbids treating him as a prisoner and guarantees free departure after recovery.
